Social Enterprise and Supply Chain Transparency

What is a Social Enterprise?

The Ākina Foundation is New Zealand’s principal intermediary for social enterprise and have been named the strategic partner to Government in the development of the Social Enterprise sector. Ākina defines social enterprises as "purpose-driven organisations that trade to deliver social and environmental impact"

Enterprise with Purpose

As a social enterprise, we aim to be a self-sustaining business, making a positive social and environmental contribution the core of what we do.

We are not a charity, we are a purpose-driven social enterprise and work alongside our charitable partner Aviva. Our Necesse Subscribers are helping restore dignity to women in New Zealand who have limited access to feminine hygiene products, while also supporting a New Zealand owned and operated enterprise.

We want consumers to make an informed decision about their body and health and the environmental and social impact of their purchasing power. This is why we believe in listing the materials and processes that constitute our organic cotton tampons and highlighting how consumers can make a positive social and environmental difference by switching from conventional brands to Necesse.

Necesse Social Impact:

For every subscriber order sent out each month we donate a box worth of our organic cotton tampons to women in need.

We have an ongoing relationship with Aviva (the Christchurch Women's Refuge) as our first offical charitable partner but in times when Aviva are fully stocked with our donated product, we are able donate to other organisations. In the past this has included donations to the Christchurch City Mission, Wellington City Mission via Soap for Society as well as making our donated product available to other charities based in the Aviva Headquarters, The Loft.

Donations to our charitable partner and other organisations are made possible thanks to our paying subscribers. As our subscriber base grows, we will be able to donate more product to a greater variety of charities and organisations across New Zealand.

Our tampons are manufactured in Europe under fair labour laws and working conditions as governed by EU Law. Framers, growers and handlers on organic cotton farms are not subject to potentially harmful chemicals from the spraying of herbicides and pesticides.

Necesse Environmental Impact:

Necesse Tampons are made from quality 100% organically grown cotton.

This means the cotton used in our tampons is grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides and other nasty chemicals.

Unlike many conventional tampons, our tampons contain nothing but organic cotton, free from fragrances, dyes, chlorinated bleaching processes, and synthetic materials such as rayon and viscose.

Being made from organic cotton means our tampons are naturally biodegradable and will decompose faster than conventional tampon products.

Organic standards prohibit the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) so all our organic cotton tampon products are also 100% GMO free.

Supply Chain Transparency:

Unfortunately there is not a manufacturer of organic cotton tampons based here in New Zealand.

Our organic tampons are manufactured in Europe by an industry leading supplier and imported by us into New Zealand. They are then packaged locally in New Zealand, using packaging made in Christchurch.

We chose our supplier based on a number of factors including a long history as a world leading sanitary supplies factory, a strong corporate responsibility commitment, quality management systems, and certification and compliance records.

Our supplier has been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and their organic cotton tampons passed dermatology tests with a rating of 'excellent'. The organic cotton used by our supplier is grown in Turkey.

Our tampon packaging is 100% recyclable, with the hygienic plastic wrapper being the only necessary plastics used (and can be recycled with your soft plastics).
